“Supercars: A Century of Spectacle and Speed” showcases the evolution of the supercar

Although still closed to the public, the Petersen Automotive Museum has opened three new exhibits: “Supercars: A Century of Spectacle and Speed,” “Extreme Conditions,” and “Redefining Performance.”

Located on the Otis Booth History Floor and supported by Michelin and Omaze, “Supercars” explores the history and emergence of the supercar through 30 preliminary and modern examples. Notable vehicles on display include a 1913 Mercer Raceabout, a 1938 Delahaye Type 145 Coupe by Henri Chapron, a 1955 Mercedes 300SL Gullwing, a 1968 Lamborghini Miura P400, a 1974 Lancia Stratos HF Stradale, a 1988 Porsche 959S, Matt Farah’s 1988 Lamborghini Countach 5000QV, a 1991 Acura NSX, a 1998 McLaren F1 LM, a 2004 Ferrari Enzo, a 2005 Saleen S7, and a 2005 Maserati MC12.

In partnership with Land Rover and Porsche Cars North America (Porsche), “Extreme Conditions” in the Customization Gallery showcases the sport and hobby of off-roading through 11 custom competition and recreational vehicles. Vehicles on display include a 2020 Land Rover Defender TreK vehicle, the “Desert Flyer,” a 1989 Porsche 911 (964 generation) which raced in the Mexican 1000, and “Goldirocks,” a rock crawler Jeep raced by the late Jessi Combs.

“Redefining Performance,” located outside of the Art Center Design Studio and supported by Porsche, highlights Porsche’s transfer of technology from the track to the road with vehicles such as a 1951 Porsche 356SL Gmünd Coupe, the 1979 Porsche 935 Kremer K3, and a 2016 Porsche 911 RSR.
