The 2022 Mecum Monterey Daytime Auction saw record attendance with enthusiastic crowds filling the fairways of the Del Monte Golf Course every day of the three-day classic and collector car auction event, held Aug. 18-20. Overall sales totals for Mecum’s annual California Car Week auction reached more than $52.1 million as a total of 297 vehicles changed hands. Among top individual sales, five sold for more than $2 million and a total of 12 sold for prices in the seven-figure range.

Ferrari proved to be an especially desirable marque at the Mecum Monterey auction, with three of the top-10-selling lots wearing the prancing horse emblem. Two of the prototypes from The Ferrari Prototype Collection were among the auction’s top 10 sellers, with the entire four-car assemblage selling for an aggregate $5.47 million. The collection’s 2014 Ferrari LaFerrari Prototype PS1 (Lot S33) achieved a $2.5 million sale, grabbing the fourth seat in top sales, and the 2012 Ferrari LaFerrari Prototype MP1 (Lot S34) reached $1.6 million, landing seat No. 6.

A prewar classic, dubbed The Final Duesenberg Show Car, came in as the auction’s second highest seller with a $2.7 million sale. As the manufacturer’s last new model to be publicly displayed on the auto show circuit, the 1936 Duesenberg Model J Rollston Convertible Berline (Lot S37), J-586/2611, was featured at the 1936 New York Auto Show and was the most expensive vehicle on display. Another prewar classic to earn top sales honors was Chassis No. 16-144-722 of The Greg Dawson Marmon Sixteen Collection with a $1.83 million sale. The 1931 Marmon Sixteen Convertible Coupe (Lot S64) is one of approximately five such vehicles that remain and features a multiple award winning restoration.

Other top sellers at the auction included a 2014 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse Jean-Pierre Wimille Legend Edition (Lot S50) that achieved $2.64 million and landed the auction’s third highest-selling slot, while a 1962 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster (Lot S62) landed fifth at $1.71 million. The top 10 list was rounded out by a 1959 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster (Lot S49) that sold for $1.49 million, a 1971 Plymouth Cuda Convertible (Lot F60) that brought $1.1 million and the 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 (Lot S58) previously owned by the late actor Paul Walker of “Fast & Furious” fame that achieved a $1.08 million sale. The car that Walker drove to promote the famous films—a 2001 Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R V-Spec II (Lot S68.1)—was also offered for sale at the Mecum Monterey auction, and it sold for a similarly strong $577,500.
