BMW’s success in racing began early. Soon after beginning production of the BMW 328 Mille Miglia in 1936, BMW took the car racing. Their 2.0-liter I-6 engine made 136 horsepower, propelling the light, aerodynamic aluminum body to multiple wins. A 1:10 scale model of the redesigned even more aerodynamic body was tested in a wind tunnel while the hand-formed, aluminum-alloy was welded to a double-tube frame, making the car even lighter. Weight savings were taken to the extreme, with incredible results. The car only weighed an astonishing 1,598 pounds, and was considered one of the most influential cars of the period, with many other car makers adopting the elegant, swooping fenders and tapering rear end.
