When most people think about BMW, or at least car lovers, they think about BMW motorsports and the M division. From the success of the 328, BMW’s commitment to racing was cemented into the company’s mission. They have had success in many racing series including Formula 1, motorcycle racing and touring car racing. Perhaps the most iconic BMW race car was the 1972 3.0 CSL. Nicknamed the “Batmobile” because of the aero package supplied with car, the 3.0 CSL did extremely well racing. In 1973, Toine Hezemans won the European Touring Car Championship in a 3.0 CSL as well as helping bring the car to a class victory at Le Mans. Hezemans and Quester had driven to second place at the 1973 German Touring Car Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, being beaten only by another 3.0 CSL. In fact, the car was so dominant that 3.0 CSLs went on to win the European Touring Car Championship from 1975.
