Vehicle Description

2000 Lamborghini Diablo VT 6.0

Chassis no. ZA9DE01AOYLA12408

The Lamborghini Diablo VT 6.0
In 1998, Audi AG took over Lamborghini and quickly tasked Luc Donckerwolke with modernising and refining the Diablo. During his time at Audi, Donckerwolke had worked on road car projects, but also the all-conquering Audi R8 Le Mans Prototype, before moving to Head of Design at Lamborghini in 1998.

The Diablo VT 6.0 was a substantial leap forward compared to the previous generation, it combined many technological improvements including a body now mainly in carbon fibre, an all-new 6.0 litre V12 DOHC engine, wider front and rear tracks for enhanced cornering ability along with an improved exhaust system. The chassis was also upgraded and the interior redesigned, also being fitted with a new air conditioning system, ensuring comfort even in the most extreme of conditions.

The new 6.0 litre, 48-valve aluminium engine delivered 20 bhp more than the previous generation, whilst also increasing torque to a staggering 620 Nm. The engine also featured variable intake valve timing system, with titanium con-rods and a lighter crankshaft, all aimed at improving performance. The five-speed manual gearbox and four-wheel Viscous Traction (‘VT’) system allowed a 0-100 km/h sprint in a mere 3.95 seconds!

Perhaps the most visually noticeable change for the VT 6.0 were the new lightweight magnesium alloy, 18-inch O.Z. wheels, featuring the now iconic ‘telephone-dial’ design, first seen on the Countach. The front nose was also redesigned slightly with two large air intakes, the indicators were relocated, and the fenders smoothened.

The 60mm wider front track also incorporated improved suspension with upgraded, electronically-controlled dampers. The rear track was also increased, with the result being vastly improved handling, comfort and aerodynamics. For the driver, the clutch, brake and accelerator pedal placements were also improved, allowing more space and increasing driveability.

This Lamborghini Diablo VT 6.0

The Lamborghini Diablo VT 6.0 offered here, chassis 12408, completed assembly in early 2000, before being sold to Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A in May 2000. Being originally owned by the Lamborghini factory itself, it is highly likely this car was used to demonstrate the latest and greatest evolution of the Diablo to Lamborghinis VIP clients visiting the Sant’Agata headquarters. The car was registered on the Italian license ‘BK564YD’ on 10th May. A few months later, in September 2000, this Diablo had covered 2,745 kms and was serviced at the Lamborghini factory, as noted in the cars service and warranty booklet.

The car was then retained by the factory for several years, until 2003 when it was purchased by a French collector, who amazingly managed to resist the temptation to experience the VT 6.0. In May 2018, the car was serviced in Italy, with a copy of the invoice contained within the cars history file, totalling €3,584.46.

With only 260 Diablo VT 6.0’s built and being the first model assembled under the new leadership of the Audi AG group, this car represents a turning point in Lamborghini’s history. However, this example is even more special, having been selected and retained by the Lamborghini factory itself for demonstration to its most important clients.
